Nestlé Purina removes 16.7 tons of plastic packaging

Nestlé Purina Australia has announced changes to its pet accessories and health and hygiene packaging that removes approximately 16.7 tons of non-recyclable or unnecessary plastic annually.

An effective change has been made to the way that Nestlé Purina Australia accessories – such as toys, collars and grooming utensils – are attached to the carrier card.

Until now, accessories have been attached with cable ties made of pure nylon plastic, which due to their size and weight cannot be recycled.

These were exchanged for either bespoke paper ties or recyclable origami-style folded paper.

The move calls for more than 3.3 tons of plastic ties to be replaced with a recyclable material, the company says.

“Another 13.4 tonnes of plastic packaging has been removed from Nestle Purina Australia's health and hygiene range,” including flea and worm medicines, as PET clamshell packaging is replaced.

The range now includes RFID stickers and is packaged in boxes made from recycled cardboard. "Replacing the mussels has reduced 13.4 tons of plastic packaging every year."

Nestlé Purina Australia Nicole Battistessa General Manager says: “We are committed to ensuring that 100% of our packaging is recyclable or reusable by 2025 – while reducing the amount of packaging we use.

“To do this, our team checked every part of the packaging for every product to evaluate every material we used – and questioned our existing packaging designs. Every little change we make is a step in the right direction. "
