Methods to Develop Radish Microgreens Shortly and Simply

If you are hesitant about growing microgreens we have the perfect starting point. Radish microgreens are some of the easiest and fastest to grow. They require very little preparation and harvest time is less than 10 days! This and much more make them ideal for new microgreen growers.

Why would you want to grow radish microgreens in the first place? First, as mentioned earlier, the harvest time is significantly shorter. And in this short time, the radish microgreens receive 40 times more nutrients per serving than a grown radish. This fact alone is reason enough to grow these small plants.

In addition to many health benefits, the radish micro-green also brings a spicy taste to the table. Most of the micro-green aroma matches the food being grown, and red radishes are no exception. They have a light, tangy taste and are surprisingly crispy. Add them to salads, stir-fries, or your favorite Mexican dish (street tacos, anyone?).

Now that we've convinced you to try radish microgreens, it's time to plant step by step. You will have grown these great green garden vegetables before you know them!

We're interested in the True Leaf Market microgreen seeds mentioned above and they have a wide variety of radishes to choose from. Some of our favorites are below:

You might be surprised to hear that every type of radish seed produces the same radish microgreens. Even the daikon radish, which resembles a fat white carrot, begins life as a series of tiny green leaves. You don't need to buy seeds specifically labeled as "radish microgreens" like radish seeds do.

We will water the microgreens from the bottom of the soil. To set this up you will need one shallow bowl with drainage holes for planting and another without holes for watering. The third compartment is used as a cover. For the watering bowl, you can also use a container or bowl that is slightly larger than the growing bowl. It needs to be able to hold a few inches of water.

For growing microgreens, we recommend using a grow light instead of sunlight. The radish microgreens are best to grow directly under the light for a constant length of time every day. With Grow Lights you can also store your microgreens indoors.

soaking

Radish microgreens are so easy to grow that they don't need to be soaked. Instead, you can add them directly to the ground.

After collecting the radish seeds and supplies, we can plant. Moisten the soil or coconut and fill it to just below the edge of the growing tray. Make the soil surface as smooth as possible so that the seeds stand evenly.

Radish and daikon radish seeds are a bit small, so you can get about 10 seeds per square inch of soil. Granted, you don't have to count them one by one, but the microgreen radish seeds should be evenly distributed. After laying out the seeds, quickly spray them with water.

These seeds require complete darkness to germinate. So put a second tray on top. Put a small weight on it for a good measure (5 pounds or less). The weight can also make the plant root good in the soil.

Leave the seeds in the dark for 2-3 days until germination is complete. When the radish microgreens grow into sprouts, slide the tray up. This is your cue to move on to the next step.

Growing

On day 3, remove the cover tray to check your seeds. If the majority are sprouts now, hold off the cover and start using the grow light. Give your baby radish microgreens at least 12 hours of light every day for good growth and a great green color. In just a few days, the small sprouts grow into spindle-shaped, white or red stems with a set of lobed cotyledons. In fact, besides being red in color, they are very similar to broccoli microgreens.

Always water your radish microgreens with a soak from the bottom of the soil after germination. This keeps the plants dry and prevents soil bacteria from growing and dampening. Fill your watering tray with a few inches of water and place the seed tray inside. Let the bottom soak in the water and remove the tray when it's done. Every few days, be sure to feel the weight of the tray to help decide whether to re-water the microgreens. You probably won't need to water for more than 2 or 3 days throughout the process.

Within a few days, each radish microgreen should be 2 to 3 inches tall. Now is the ideal time to harvest – just before the real green leaves start growing. Use your kitchen scissors to remove the radish microgreens just above the bottom.

If you only need to use a small amount of microgreens at this point, wait for the rest to be harvested as needed. However, collect them all shortly, otherwise the taste may change. Of course, you can always harvest everything in one day and simply prepare them for proper storage.

storage

When stored correctly, your radish microgreens should be used for a week or two. They definitely taste best when eaten as fresh as possible. Just rinse them in cold water and add them raw to any dish.

Place the radish microgreens straight into an airtight container in the refrigerator for storage (use the sharper drawer). They need to be as dry as possible so that they can be stored well. So don't wash them until you're ready to use them. If you see moisture in the container over the next few days, place an absorbent paper towel in the container and put it back in the refrigerator. You will see the micros stay green and taste fresh for a few days!
