Nespresso is committed to making each of its Nespresso coffees – be it at home or with professional customers – carbon neutral by 2022.
The team has already achieved carbon neutrality in its operations since 2017 (areas 1 and 2) and will continue its commitment to tackling emissions in its supply chain and product life (area 3).
"Climate change is a reality and our future depends on us continuing to meet our sustainability commitments faster," says Guillaume Le Cunff, CEO of Nespresso.
“That's why we're accelerating our commitment to offer our customers the opportunity to have a climate-neutral cup of coffee by 2022. A coffee made from the best and rarest beans from sustainable production.
"Our business and the coffee industry can be a force for food in the world, and I hope our commitment will encourage others to follow suit."
Nespresso initiatives
- Reduction of carbon emissions
Sustainable energy consumption in the operation of Nespresso: Rely on 100% renewable energy in all Nespresso boutiques and increase the use of biogas in the manufacturing process.
Extended circularity of Nespresso products and packaging: Increase the use of recycled plastic in Nespresso machines and recycled and low-carbon aluminum in coffee capsules.
- Planting trees in coffee farms and surrounding landscapes (inset): Planting trees provides the shade needed to improve the quality and quantity of a coffee crop. The roots also protect soil erosion and landslides again and promote soil regeneration. The Nespresso and Pur project will triple its use in coffee producing countries.
- Accelerate to have positive impacts immediately (offsetting initiatives): Nespresso will invest in projects to help protect and restore forests and implement clean energy solutions in agricultural communities.
Nespresso Brand Ambassador, Nespresso Sustainability Advisory Board member and actor George Clooney, says: “Climate change is now happening, which means we must all take responsibility and act quickly.
"These ambitions and visions build on the commitment to sustainability that I have been part of over the past seven years. I am excited to see the good that Nespresso can deliver over the next 10 years."
