The research found by Roy Morgan has shown that the main motivations of the Australians for local manufacturing are:
- Reduction of Australia's dependence on other countries (38%)
- Create jobs (26%)
- Supporting Australian Business and Industry (26%)
- Protection for endangered international supply chains (20%)
- Strengthening the Australian economy (16%)
"Australia's over-reliance on imported products was highlighted during the Covid-19 pandemic," said Ben Lazzaro, chief executive of Australian Made.
"This study shows that Australians are prioritizing self-sufficiency, job creation and a renewed appetite to tackle the imbalance between locally made and imported products in order to secure Australia's long-term prosperity."
Mr Lazzaro goes on to say that there are so many benefits to being made locally that the Australians have noticed lately.
Michele Levine, CEO of Roy Morgan, says: “More and more Australians are now organizing the delivery of products. Research online before buying; Online shopping, both in stores they normally visit and in various stores.
"And critical, as Covid-19 Australians prefer more and more Australian products."
The Australian Made website doubled its online traffic from April to June compared to the same period last year.
According to Lazzaro, 43% of Australians are now more likely to look for country of origin labels on products.
