Coping with ceiling water injury

Damage to the ceiling from water is a very common problem both in households and in company buildings. The most popular reason for this problem is heavy rains. However, it is also caused by waterlogging, leaks from a tap, bursting pipes or the old stature of a building.

Let's go through the steps to deal with this problem:

Step 1

Remove any goods under the blanket

First of all, we should remove all items under the blanket to avoid wear and tear, and then put a bucket under the blanket if the water is still escaping to collect water.

step 2

Find the water source

We should look for the source of the water damage and take appropriate measures to stop it. If the source is rain, we must try to cover the outside of the ceiling with a thick polyethylene film to reduce the water ingress. If it was logged water, drain it using a mug or wiper. If it was a flowing water source like a faucet or pipe, turn it off.

step 3

Dry out the blanket

If the water accumulates slightly, the blanket dries by itself in a day or two. However, if the water molecules get into the blanket, it remains moist. In such cases we have to switch on the heater to make drying easier. We can open windows so that air can enter. If water accumulates from the outside, we can soak water with a cloth and let it drain. Use a screwdriver to check if there is still water in the cracks until you are sure that it is completely dry.

Step 4

Repair minor damage

Minor damage can be easily remedied with every instant leak stop. It was specially developed to prevent water damage from wet cracks. It is manufactured by the leading hardware companies and can fix the problem for one to three years. It is a ready-to-use mixture of special cement and additives that can help immediately in an emergency.

Step 5

Eliminate serious damage

In cases where severe damage has been caused by water, we must first determine the dimensions of the damaged area using a scale or a tape measure. With the help of a knife, try to remove the scratched surfaces of the ceiling. Use sandpaper to make sure the surface is flat. After that, check if the plasterboard is damaged and replace it. You can coat the ceiling from the outside using cement or tar to ensure that the surface is intact. If the inside of the ceiling is still damaged, coat it evenly with plaster.

Step 6

Remove marks

To remove the markings from the patch or the “Instant Leak Stop”, apply a primer layer on the colored area. If necessary, apply another layer of primer when the first layer is completely dry. The use of primer is necessary to avoid transparency. After that we can start with the picture. If one layer is not enough, apply a second coat. It is recommended to paint the entire ceiling to get a smooth texture.

  • If you continue to experience problems after all of these steps, it is recommended that you seek professional help.
  • Personal security must be ensured in all of these steps. You must wear gloves, safety glasses and helmets to avoid injuries.
  • Children are not allowed to do any of these activities without adult supervision.
