REMOVE RUST FROM HARD SURFACES AND LAUNDRY
As seen on 3TV / Phoenix – Good Morning Arizona – Monday, February 24, 2020 – 8:45 a.m.
RUST ON KNIFE BLADES COMING FROM THE DISHWASHER
The blades of stainless steel knives contain harder steel to keep the cutting edge. This will rust more easily, especially if it contains an acidic food like marinara sauce. To remove it, take the Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser. This is a mild pumice stone cleaner that doesn't scratch. Wet a paper towel and sprinkle the detergent over it. Rub the knife over it until the rust disappears. Wash immediately. Find bartenders in grocery stores, large stores, home centers, etc. Comes in a light gold can with dark blue lettering.
RUST ON METAL AND HARD SURFACES:
Potato and dish soap
I know it sounds crazy, but it really works. Cut your potato in half and cover the open end with detergent. Use the potato like a scouring pad and watch the rust disappear when it reacts with soap and potato. I have successfully applied this to cast iron.
Lemon and Salt – This is ideal for rust on countertops, etc.
Coat the rusted area generously with a layer of salt. Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice over the salt. Let the mixture work for about 15 minutes and then scrub off the rust with the lemon peel. If rust remains, repeat the process and let salt and juice rest for an hour or two until the rust disappears completely. Rinse and dry.
TOILET BOWL RUST – Certainly also for septic tanks
Instead of harsh chemicals, grab the Tang ™ or an orange-flavored breakfast drink. If you don't, use 2 or 3 packs of Lemon Kool Aid. Pour in, wipe and leave on the toilet for a few hours or overnight. Scrub and rinse with a toilet brush. The citric acid removes the rust.
RUST ON TILES AND OTHER HARD SURFACES
Combine lemon juice and tartar (spice area in the shop) into a paste the thickness of white school glue. Apply to the surface and work in. Let it rest for about an hour and then rub, wipe and wash.
RUST ON POOL DECKING:
Do it on a cool pool deck and not in direct sunlight.
Moisten the surface well and sprinkle on Bar Keepers Friend ™ Cleanser. Work it in and leave it on for about 15 minutes. Rub carefully, do not scrub. As soon as the rust has disappeared, rinse well.
RUST ON CHROME
Rub chrome with the shiny side of the aluminum foil until the rust has gone.
LAUNDRY and FABRICS
Apply lemon juice to white fabrics and sit in the sun. You can also wet the fabric and work in tartar cream. Let it sit, check if rust has disappeared, repeat the process as necessary and wash it.
PRODUCTS YOU CAN BUY – I put these products to the test. They contain aggressive chemicals. So read ALL the instructions and be extremely careful.
