It is true that e-commerce has skyrocketed recently due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In fact, online shopping grew 57% over the past year, resulting in a significant increase in delivery vehicles on roads.
The Australian transport sector is responsible for almost a fifth of the country's carbon emissions.
New research shows that 68% of Australians would choose lower carbon parcel delivery methods.
Ahead of Earth Day (April 22nd), the CEO of the package collection service, Hubbed is providing retailers and shippers with timely tactics to reduce their carbon footprint.
"The e-commerce boom we have seen over the past 12 months has resulted in unprecedented growth in the industry," said David McLean, Founder and CEO of Hubbed.
“In fact, we can assume that more than 2 billion people worldwide will shop online this year. Our results show that Australians are very aware of the environmental impact of online shopping and are open to changing their behavior. "
Mr McLean's 5 Tactics To Help Retailers Improve Sustainability Before Earth Day:
- Offer delivery methods that reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
Mr. McLean suggests that online retailers consider offering alternative delivery options at the checkout, such as: B. delivery to collection points. This allows couriers to deliver multiple packages to one place.
- Bring packages closer to customers.
Retailers and freight forwarders should consider using “micro-fulfillment centers” in metropolitan areas. This can shorten the distance between customers and their online orders.
- Educate consumers about the impact of certain delivery options.
It is important to educate consumers about the negative environmental impact of same day delivery. Shorter periods of time put pressure on carriers to deliver orders quickly and force drivers to start delivery trips with vehicles at full capacity.
- Partner with environmentally conscious freight forwarders.
Some airlines are already making environmentally friendly changes. Look for shippers who are already starting to reduce their carbon footprint.
- Consider sustainable packaging options.
Mr. McLean also suggests looking for environmentally friendly packaging and advises retailers to use recycled or low carbon packaging materials, satchels and cardboard boxes.
