The term “same day delivery” is increasingly used as a catchphrase to attract customers to businesses.
However, do online shoppers really want same-day delivery?
New research from Hubbed shows that only a third of shoppers pick up their packages on the day they're ready to be picked up.
In particular, 36% of online shoppers picked up their packages on the day they were delivered to collection points. 47% of shoppers picked up their packages at a pick-up location two to four days after arrival, and 17% waited five days or more.
"Our results suggest that the majority of our collection customers are not considering same-day delivery as a priority," said David McLean, CEO and founder of Hubbed.
“Instead, we think that most customers choose same-day delivery as a guarantee that delivery will arrive. They also seem to view collection points as a means of keeping their packages safe until they are ready to pick them up at a time convenient for them.
"This is extremely useful for retailers, some of whom have prioritized same-day delivery services that are important but should be supported with a convenient click-and-collect network."
The Hubbed collection point network includes 7-Eleven stores, BP gas stations, Pack and Send, Repco and independent retail stores.
The pick-up dates show that after-hours pick-up is popular with 45% of people who choose to pick up parcels after 3 p.m.
McLean adds, “As online shopping continues to expand, Australians are looking for options for safe, reliable and sustainable parcel collection near their home.
“The Hubbed network, with more than 2000 locations across Australia, enables customers to pick up parcels from convenient locations, many of which are open 24/7, offer parking and are free from queues.
"The service reassures consumers that their packages will be kept in a secure, local store until they are ready to be picked up."
