UlcerEze is a TGA-approved soluble patch that protects and heals mouth ulcers.
It was created by Two Melbourne pharmacists who set out to help their customers find relief from painful mouth ulcers. They have seen their innovation “explode in popularity” over the past year, now available in more than 3000 locations across Australia including Woolworths supermarkets and major pharmacy chains.
This rapid uptake followed TGA’s decision to pull popular mouth ulcer gels like Bonjela from supermarket shelves due to toxicity concerns.
The innovation has also been rapidly adopted within the cancer community, where painful mouth ulcers are one of the most debilitating and under-recognised side effects of treatment.
Pharmacists Abdul Azzam and Nael Karim developed the concept for UlcerEze after years of listening to patients describe the frustration of using gels that washed away within seconds. Their “world-first” composition allows the patch to work with saliva rather than against it, forming a protective layer that stays in place for hours while releasing natural ingredients that soothe, protect and heal.
As it’s alcohol-free and made entirely from natural ingredients, UlcerEze can be safely used by children and by people undergoing medical treatment or taking prescription medications.
Dr Mostafa Khalafalla, a Melbourne GP, says mouth ulcers can have serious consequences if left unmanaged.
“When ulcers form, even soft foods can cause pain. People stop eating properly, and that lack of nutrition slows healing and weakens the immune system,” he says. “For cancer patients, this can become a dangerous spiral. Their body needs nutrients to recover, but eating becomes too painful.”
Mr Khalafalla adds that traditional mouth ulcer gels provide only brief relief before being washed away by saliva.
“They don’t stay in place long enough to protect the ulcer or help it heal,” he says.
UlcerEze solves this problem with a three-step process. First, the small round patch gently adheres to the ulcer. Second, it forms a soft, soothing barrier that shields the sore from saliva, food, and friction. Third, it releases natural ingredients that calm inflammation, ease pain, and promote faster healing.
The product’s natural ingredients include phosphorus oxide to relieve pain and reduce inflammation, silicon dioxide to support tissue repair, and calcium oxide to form the protective barrier. Its unique composition means it adheres only to the ulcer, not to healthy tissue, providing targeted, comfortable relief exactly where it’s needed most.
