Retail sector shake up as Amazon enters B2B market

Amazon Australia has launched Amazon Business, a new business-to-business (B2B) store that makes business purchasing “easier and more cost effective” for Australian organisations of all sizes. Amazon Business offers the selection, convenience and value customers enjoy from Amazon.com.au, with a range of new features and unique benefits tailored to businesses. These benefits include business-only pricing and quantity discounts on eligible selection, single or multi-user business accounts, Business Prime, and dedicated customer support.

The launch comes as new research conducted by YouGov and commissioned by Amazon Australia shows that the cost of doing business has increased for 92 per cent of Australian small and medium businesses (SMBs) over the past three years. According to the research, rising operating costs are the biggest concern for 79 per cent of SMBs, with the cost of goods and products (62 per cent) being the main driver of cost increases across their business. In fact, 83 per cent of respondents have had to pass the pressure of rising costs onto their customers over the past three years.

The arrival of Amazon Business comes at a pivotal time for SMBs, with most businesses stocking up on supplies as the end of the financial year approaches. Amazon Business provides a wide selection for Australian businesses, across office products, electronics, furniture and more, all at great prices, and underpinned by Amazon’s convenient delivery options. Australia is the eleventh country where Amazon Business has launched, following Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Amazon Business Australia Country Manager Lena Zak says: “Amazon Australia is excited to support Australian businesses and organisations of all sizes with simplifying a critical aspect of their operations, so they can focus on what’s most important to them: serving their own customers better, while growing their organisations.

“We know that 78 per cent of SMBs have had to implement cost-cutting measures over the past three years. As operating costs keep rising, Amazon Business can help take some of that pressure off by offering meaningful savings on everyday goods and supplies, along with the convenience and simplicity of our delivery experience.

“Amazon Australia has significantly invested in and expanded its operations network to enable a seamless, faster and more reliable shopping experience for customers, and we are thrilled to now be offering that to business customers. We know this will be particularly beneficial for the millions of SMBs who operate across the country.”

The benefits of Amazon Business

Once registered with Amazon Business, businesses can enjoy the selection, convenience and value that Amazon is known for, with features tailored to meet their specific needs. These features include:

  • First Time Purchase Discount – All verified Amazon Business customers can receive a further 30 per cent discount (up to $100) on their first purchase until 30 June 2025.
  • Business Prime – Business Prime combines the shipping benefits Prime members enjoy, with exclusive business features like shared accounts and buying policies, tailored to help organisations of every size streamline procurement, reduce costs, and increase productivity.
  • Single and Quantity Discounts – Business pricing and quantity discounts give business customers exclusive lower prices on eligible items. Offering both single-unit discounts, and additional discounts when buying in bulk, Amazon Business delivers immediate savings compared to consumer pricing. In fact, business customers can save up to 10% on hundreds of thousands of products, and up to 20% with Quantity Discounts (starting at just two units of the same item).
  • Spending Limits – Spending limits allow organisations to set specific spending thresholds for individual users or groups, automatically preventing purchases that exceed defined budgets, and helping maintain cost control across the organisation.
  • Approval Workflows – Approval workflows enable organisations to create customised purchase approval processes, where designated approvers must review and authorise orders before they can be placed – ensuring compliance with company purchasing policies and budget controls.
  • Multi-User Account – Multi-user accounts enable organisations to add multiple employees to a single business account with customised roles and permissions, allowing teams to share payment methods and shipping addresses while maintaining visibility and control over purchasing.
  • Guided Buying – Guided buying is a feature that allows organisations to guide employees to preferred products and suppliers while restricting access to others, helping enforce purchasing policies, control spend and maintain compliance across their organisation.
  • Business Invoices – Invoices will be available on a wide range of products, and will have a badge in the Detail Page confirming availability.
  • Climate Pledge Friendly program – We make it easy for companies to identify and purchase more sustainable products. This program highlights items that meet third-party sustainability certifications, helping businesses reduce their environmental impact without compromising on quality.

The launch of Amazon Business will also bring a new cohort of customers to the many thousands of Australian selling partners that sell on Amazon.com.au. By featuring their product catalogue on Amazon’s B2B store, they’ll be able to reach new audiences. Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) is a fulfilment method available for sellers on Amazon.com.au, built to enable third party sellers to make the most of Amazon’s advanced logistics network. FBA sellers just need to send their product to one of Amazon’s fulfilment centres, and Amazon then stores, picks, packs and ships the seller’s order to business and consumer customers alike.

Majid Ali, owner of Canberra based business Posh Majestic said: “Selling on Amazon has been a great move for our business, connecting us with customers all over Australia.

“I’m really looking forward to what Amazon Business can do for my business as it will open up a whole new cohort of customers, meaning I can now reach business customers through Amazon. It makes things so much easier with simple tools to manage stock and track how we’re doing. Our anti-fatigue mats are perfect for offices and workspaces, so being able to sell directly to businesses is a huge chance for us to grow.”

Amazon Business makes business buying simpler by offering the same easy-to-use experience customers know and love from Amazon. Since launching in the United States in 2015, Amazon Business has empowered businesses of all sizes through unmatched selection, deep discounts, and smart capabilities. Amazon Business drives roughly $35B in annualised gross sales and has more than eight million customers worldwide, including 96 of the Fortune 100, 66 of the FTSE 100, and 38 of the DAX-40 companies.

Working closely with customers to understand their business buying challenges, Amazon Business continues to develop new technologies that make it easy for organisations and administrators to define, meet, and proactively measure progress towards their purchasing budgets and goals.

With this launch, Amazon Business is now a strategic partner to businesses in 11 countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
