ARA strengthens sustainability focus with new appointment

The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) announced the appointment of retail sustainability specialist Jason Robertson as the newly created Director of Sustainability and Impact.

Paul Zahra, CEO of ARA, says sustainability is one of the biggest challenges we face – both as a community and as a sector.

"We are excited to strengthen our resources in this important area and to work on initiatives that can deliver sustainable results for customers, businesses and government agencies," said Zahra.

“Jason is one of the most experienced retail sustainability experts in the country. He will work closely with ARA members to advise and represent their needs and bring about positive change for the community and the environment.

“The retail sector is already leading the way in so many positive sustainability results. By uniting the sector with one voice and promoting collaborative efforts where it makes sense, we hope to take the impact of our members to the next level. "

Mr. Robertson will lead the development of an industry-wide sustainability and social impact strategy to drive space dynamics. He will also serve as the first chairman of the ARA Sustainability Advisory Committee.

Mr. Robertson led David Jones' sustainability agenda for 12 years, including serving as director of social responsibility and sustainability. He also led projects for IAG on responsible sourcing and supply chain governance and for NBN Co, where he led the development of a strategic framework for CSR. Previously, he worked with SMBs, owners and franchisees in the dynamic grocery retail sector in Australia.

"I am excited to use my retail experience over the past two decades to lead cross-industry sustainability and impact efforts," said Robertson.

“We have a great foundation to build on: 75% of our main members and 50% of our main members have established sustainability programs. We want to capitalize on all of this great work and intend to make all of our members more sustainable and leverage the collective weight of Australian retailers to drive positive sustainability results across the industry.

"We will also explore where ARA can focus its efforts to improve social and environmental outcomes, while exploring ways that can reduce the cost of our members' doing business."
