Get your crunch on this veggie week

Kale your friends because Vegetable Week & The Big Vegie Crunch is back in 2021.

The free health promotion event takes place in elementary schools in New South Wales and is funded by NSW Health. Vegetable Week is a week-long vegetable celebration from March 15-19, 2021.

The Big Vegie Crunch takes place at Mach 10:18, when tens of thousands of elementary school students across NSW gather and eat vegetables at the same time. In 2021 the team aims to "turn over" the unbelievable records of the past few years:

  • In 2018, 50,260 students crunched at the same time.
  • 14,991 students grind at another time of Vegetable Week in 2019.

Around 6% of Australian children eat enough vegetables, and events like this can help children eat more vegetables.

"It is recommended that children between the ages of 4 and 12 eat about five servings of vegetables a day," says Katie Booth of the Healthy Kids Association.

“Events like this at school, when combined with peer influence and food education, can raise awareness and help children try different vegetables. We hear so many stories from parents who are amazed at how their children eat more vegetables and have more choices of vegetables after their school is involved. "
