We love to rent. While many people view renting as a stop gap option or in response to the increasingly prohibitive real estate prices in Australia, it is actually a better option for many Australians who like the flexibility renting gives them. However, like most things in the “adult” world, renting is associated with some of the administrative hurdles. We're here to walk you through each step with our guide to renting in Australia.
Money money money
Whether you rent or buy, the cost of living in Australia is downright astronomical. Saving to move away from home as a renter is almost as daunting as saving for a home security deposit. However, when you get into a lease you want to have a fair balance of savings to draw on.
Basic budgeting
Saving is a chore and it can be easy to fall off the cart, which is why we always recommend creating a rock body budget. The first step is to keep a log of your monthly expenses and break them down into different categories like subscriptions, entertainment, transportation, and whatever other categories that make sense for your spending habits. Once you have an idea of how much you are spending and what kind of things you are spending it on, then you can figure out how to make savings. It's up to you how you save, whether to eat at home instead of a restaurant, or use public transportation instead of carpooling, or even sell some large ticket items that you no longer use or need. The bottom line, however, is that the budget will only work if you stick to it – so stick with it!
Location, location, location
Typically, for tenants, location is the most important factor to consider when choosing a property. Most renters only stay in a property for a year or two and are usually a little younger, so lifestyle is an important consideration. Ask yourself what kind of life you imagine in this accommodation. Are you going to live with friends or with your partner? Would you like to be near the coast or in the hustle and bustle of a big city? Is it important to be able to go to work or do you just need to be near good transportation lines? Do you want to be close to the coolest new bars and restaurants, or do you prefer somewhere secluded? The answers to these questions will help you decide which suburb to live in. insurance
Even if it seems very confusing, much too grown up and too dense with impenetrable language and dense conditions, Insurance is undoubtedly important for renters too. Even if you are only renting, it is important that you have insurance for your belongings and furniture. It is vital for all tenants to ensure that the things you own are insured against theft, fire, flood, or vandalism. Remember that every situation is different and it is important that you do your research and consult a professional before choosing your insurance policy.
Move on
The actual process of packing your belongings and moving house can be incredibly stressful, and trying to navigate the complicated process can take away all of the enjoyment of an exciting time in your life. Below you will find our tips to make the moving process as painless as possible.
Make Marie Kondo proud and clean while you pack
If Marie Kondo is to be heard, cleaning up can be incredibly joyful, liberating, and useful (this has never been my experience, but hey, she's the expert!). The weeks and months leading up to a big move are the perfect times for a major disappointment. When packing your life, make sure you don't take unnecessary things with you. Only keep the things you enjoy and donate or throw away the rest. Check this out to make the process even easier List of charities Acceptance of donations of household goods.
Co-opt some friends to help you move
Even after disappointing, you probably still have an overwhelming amount of stuff to lug from one house to another. Packing and moving is a daunting task, which is why we 100% recommend involving your friends in the fun. Bribe them with wine and a free meal if you have to. Just make sure you have extra hands on board if you postpone the day! The important thing is that people make a new house feel right at home and that having your friends with you is a surefire way to instantly make your new house feel at home.
