When it comes to animal stains, two things can work against you: you may not spot the animal stain early enough, and you may use the wrong cleaning method for the job! Not all pet spots are in your field of vision. Sometimes your sense of smell, knowledge of your pet, and intuition are necessary. When you get a black light, you can find more subtle problems as well. Regardless of how you find them, you need to find them ASAP. Set stains can kill your carpet. Know your own carpet. While there are some seemingly universal cleaners – like vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide – some carpets react just as badly to these as heavy duty chemical cleaners. Testing a small, undetectable stain is a great way to prevent a pet's little accident from turning into a much bigger mess that you made yourself.
Smaller fair
Urine is usually the easiest pet stain to remove, but don't let the lack of dirt fool you. It is critical to remove the odor from pet urine before it penetrates too deeply into the carpet fibers. First, carefully collect as much urine as you can with paper towels or dirty rags. Next, make a spray or pour solution on the stain that will lift the urine and remove the odor. A common solution is a cup of vinegar, a cup of warm water, and a tablespoon of baking soda. Leave the solution in place for up to 10 minutes. If necessary, use a soft-bristled brush to apply the solution to the area. Then pat dry with fresh paper towels.
Bigger problems
Larger spills such as feces or vomiting require additional steps. You must first pick up any solid waste carefully. Then, pick up as much waste as you can and press paper towels or rags firmly into the carpet. Walking on with shoes will also help and will bring as much moisture out of the area as possible. Once you are done, make a solution and follow the steps above. Adding a tablespoon of dish soap to your solution and / or pouring baking soda directly on the stain adds extra cleaning power. After you've saturated the area with your solution, scrub. Repetition is key here. Alternate between vacuuming the raised stains and cleaning the area with your chosen combination of solutions.
Time to vacuum
Vacuuming works well on heavy carpet stains. We recommend running a portable carpet cleaner over the scrubbed and dried area for pet stains. Portable carpet cleaners are great for on-site treatment and are really pet friendly. You can save time by purchasing a wet portable carpet cleaner or vacuum cleaner. Kill two birds with one stone by rinsing the stain and vacuuming the subsequent dirty water from your carpet fibers.
We love our pets through every mess we expect from them. However, if you follow these techniques you will most likely be able to remove all pet stains without sacrificing your carpet.
