Decembeard helps all of them

December is taking a back seat and Decembeard is here!

December 1-30 is a month dedicated to colorectal cancer awareness and fundraising.

Colon cancer is Australia's second deadliest cancer and affects men and women, young and old.

Another scary fact? One in 13 Australians will develop the disease at some point in their life.

However, this isn't an article to scare you – it's meant to encourage and inspire you to jump on the beard cart.

Get hairy

As stated on Bowel Cancer Australia's website:

"Beards aren't just for hipsters, grandpas, men who ride motorcycles, or people who are too lazy to shave." Anyone can help make a real change.

"All you have to do is grow a beard or stubble and promote your facial hair to raise awareness and resources for Australia's second deadliest cancer killers."

Those who want to participate can also do so virtually.

Add a virtual decembeard to your Facebook profile picture and encourage your family and friends to do the same.

"To activate the frame on your profile, just go to your Facebook page and click on your profile picture."

Me, my hair and why

Basically anyone can get colon cancer, and the “Me, my hair and why” section on the Colon Cancer Australia page proves just that.

There is a wide range of people and their stories, or stories from someone they are close to regarding cancer.

Joel S, 36, begins his story by saying, “… like many of the stories I've read, I was a very healthy 36-year-old who played sports all the time, eats healthily, and has no family history of colon cancer. It was just a godsend.

"I haven't wasted time thinking about why me?" My reaction was, "Well what do I have to do to get better?" (With a lot of weeping between diagnosis and treatment plan). "
