The Romeo-Metcash partnership is flourishing out there

The praise for the efforts of the Romeo family in collaboration with Metcash and the independent network – IGA and Foodland – in helping local communities during tough industrial times was a feature of the Romeo Retail Group's recent business update and the Supplier of the Year Awards event .

Scott Marshall, CEO of Metcash Food, spoke at the annual meeting of the Romeo Group in Sydney about the successful collaboration between the independent network and the suppliers, in particular about the performance in the current environment, and stated that the model has a successful and sustainable future Has.

He added that new shoppers had come into stores and kept coming back.

Looking ahead, he warned that if government subsidies were removed, which would change the retail landscape, the economic impact would be felt in 2021, but Metcash would continue to raise the bar for independents and stay competitive.

Mr Marshall said Metcash completed 48 Diamond Store Accelerator (DSA) supermarkets in the first half, with a goal of around 120 supermarkets in the rear half.

The new distribution center in South Australia will open before Christmas time. This is an enormous achievement for Metcash and the independent retailers Foodland and IGA. With greater reach, sales should increase 20 percent, he added.

The group's director, Joseph Romeo, said grocery trade results for the twelve months showed growth of 22.1 percent in SA and 2.42 percent in NSW.

In SA he cited the launch of the large-format Kilkenny Foodland store with "a massive range of fresh food." In NSW, he added, the launch of the SUPA VALU Doonside Big Box format brought a whole new offering that dwarfed competitors like Coles, Woolworths and ALDI.

Mr Romeo said budgeted sales in SA are expected to grow 10 percent due to DSA, while in NSW expected growth from new business is expected to be 40 percent.

The group is showcasing what he calls “an exciting new concept store offering” that would be “unlike any other supermarket in Australia” in Sydney, with an on-site chef, restaurant experience, food, delicatessen, salumi and a sushi bar, a take-away offer and the entire core food business, all of which were presented at the opening in March.
