Gophers are rodents that burrow in your yard, creating unsightly mounds and holes. You can get rid of these rodents by understanding their way of life, how they dig, the differences in the mounds, and other characteristics that set them apart from moles and other rodents. In this article we will discuss how to get rid of gophers and other related rodents from your garden so that they do not cause much harm to your plants and plants.
Here are methods to keep gophers out of your yard:
1. Flooded the gophers from the garden or the Y.ard
This is one of the many methods that you can use to get these rodents out of your yard or yard. However, care must be taken not to interfere with the foundations of any building near the caves. First, identify the gopher tunnels from the surface. It is not very easy to identify these tunnels. However, use the mounds and clues of the tunnels and, with the help, pour water into the tunnels dramatically and quickly. Use gallon buckets to pour the water from different directions or different tunnels to flood the tunnels and drive out the gophers. You can do this in early spring or late winter just before these rodents start breeding.
2. Fenced gardens against the rodents
This is another great way to make sure your plants don't get destroyed by gophers. It may be a bit expensive, but it will pay off in the long run. Create barriers around your gardens by lifting the beds and nailing wire mesh to the sides and bottom of the beds. For new trees, you can plant them in a wire basket frame to protect the roots from gophers. Existing trees could be a little difficult to protect. One way to protect the trees is to install an underground gopher fence in the form of hardware wire mesh.
3. Catch gophers
Catching rodents is a very effective method of controlling the gophers when the other methods you are trying fail. However, be aware that this will result in the killing of these rodents. Some trappers are made specifically for gophers and are commercially available. To use these items successfully, you need to make sure that you use them in the active caves.
4. Use odors that repel gophers
Gophers have sensitive noses and, as such, it's easy to drive them out of your yard by the use of odors these rodents repel. One of the things these rodents can repel is the smell of fish. You can put some fish fins or meat in the tunnels. You can also use castor oil for this purpose. Drop some castor oil capsules in the tunnel and let it work. Coffee grounds are another thing that you can put in the tunnels and make them work. Mix the coffee grounds with soil and sprinkle them into the gopher tunnels. These smells are supposed to help you chase the rodents.
