There's extra after asking R U OK.

Today is National R U OK? Day.

It's a day to take a second to remind yourself that every person you meet may be fighting a struggle within themselves, struggling to speak out about their inner thoughts and feelings.

It is an unforgettable day, the power that lies behind a conversation and three little words.

This year in particular has been incredibly challenging, and we've all looked at topics we've never looked at before and even more emphasized the importance of having an ear and asking the question: R U OK?

The thing is, it goes beyond whether you're okay.

Like the R U OK? The team mentions on their website, "You don't have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they're not okay."

"Knowing what to say can help someone feel supported and get appropriate help long before they're in crisis, which can have a positive impact on their life."

It can feel overwhelming when someone replies, “No, I'm actually not okay”. So the team has put together tips and guidelines for suggesting how you can respond. You can find more information here at ruok.org.au/how -fragen.

Confronting the issue of mental health isn't easy, so R U OK? breaks the process down into four simple steps to help:

  1. ask
  2. listen
  3. Encourage action
  4. Check in

Don't forget about your workplace

This is also important in work environments.

The National Retail Association (NRA) mentions that retailers' mental health has been a top priority since the Covid-19 pandemic began, and speaks of the support they are providing to ensure businesses have the tools to To help team members.

“… From providing resources to support mental health on our Covid-19 site, to hosting webinars, to working with our Workplace Wellness partner Luemo.

"However, in your own workplace, it can be difficult to start a conversation when you see someone who may need your assistance."

The message continues: "… take the time to look at the free resources that are available to help everyone feel safe, supported, and encouraged at work."
