Maintain your pool glowing clear with these upkeep suggestions

It's great to have a pool where you can relax and have a refreshing time. But to enjoy your pool all summer, it has to be squeaky clean. Regular maintenance saves you repair costs and extends the life of your pool.

Here are our tips on how to keep your pool clean.

Skim the surface daily

We wanted to start the list with a simple one. You see leaves and debris on the surface of your pool, you fly over them. If you have the right equipment, you can do it yourself. Remember to do this as often, preferably daily. Otherwise, you will find that there is a lot of work to do on the weekend. If you don't have a skimmer, you can always use an old window screen.

Remove the stains

Stains are one of the worst things that can happen to your pool tiles. To get rid of them, you need to identify the type of stain. It can be caused by metals and minerals, rust, or materials like leaves, dirt, oil, or algae. Each type of stain requires different cleaning methods. If you are having trouble maintaining your pool, you can call a cleaning service. This is true even if you cannot identify the cause of the stain in your pool. Find a good stain removal service and give them a call. A technician will explain the problem in your pool and how to fix it.

Balance the chemicals in your pool

If the chemicals in your pool are not balanced, the water will be cloudy and will leave residue on your skin. It is important to know and balance the six chemical levels. There are kits that you can buy at a pool shop to test the water and know the chemical levels. Ask the shop owner how to adjust the levels so that they are balanced. After equalizing the levels, you will immediately notice a difference as the water is clear.

Keep your pool squeaky clean with these maintenance tips - clean water

Clean the pool filter

Your pool will need to be cleaned a few times a year, but this will depend on how often you use it. There are indications that the filter needs cleaning. Look at the drain at the bottom of the pool. If it is clogged, you need to clean the filter. The same applies if the hose cleaner is sluggish or if the pool generates unpleasant odors. We recommend that you buy a cartridge filter as it will keep the water clear, protect it from wastage and you only need to clean it once or twice a year.

Use a tennis ball to pick up oils

When we get out of the pool, we leave our oils behind. These include suntan oil, hair products, and natural oils that are produced by the skin. This can be a problem as it leaves visible marks in the pool over time and makes it unclean. Fortunately, your barely-used tennis ball can come to the rescue. Tennis balls are made of fibers that absorb the oils in the water. So if you just throw one in the pool, this will be enough.

Scrub the sides of the pool

Scrubbing will make the sides of your pool look clean and fresh. You can do it occasionally, but at least twice a month. If you don't do this, algae will form. If you notice it growing, you can use a brush and chlorine-based cleaner. If a stain doesn't come out, leave an old sock filled with chlorine in exactly the right place for a few hours. Then scrub again and the stubborn stain should be gone.

Get an automatic pool cover

Investing in an automatic pool cover will save you time and money. Your pool will stay cleaner longer because less dirt and algae grow. Sunlight does not reduce the effects of chlorine in the pool. And the temperature remains constant. This is a great idea as we don't use the pool for most of the year anyway.

Your pool is like your house and your car. It needs to be well looked after and cared for. Cleanliness is the number one maintenance strategy. You can set reminders on your phone to scrub the pages every two weeks. Skimming must be done daily unless you cover it. Problems such as cloudiness, odor, or stains need to be resolved as soon as possible. Remember to change the pool water every 2-3 years to prevent the build-up of algae and bacteria. And if you can't fix something, don't be afraid to call on professionals who can best handle it.
