Since moving is not just about moving your goods from one place to another, we have compiled a list of measures that you need to prepare to make your move easier on D-Day.

A few months before moving

  • Do not renew your lease if you are a tenant. Make sure you notify your landlord within the deadlines. Choose your new home and the date of the move. Confirm the day with your employer when you need to take time off.
  • Contact professional moving companies for quotes and possibly reserve a truck and team. Plan the packaging of household appliances and other special items with the selected moving company as well as the insurance of your goods during transport.
  • Plan for institutional changes (kindergarten, day care center, bank, clinic, neighborhood association, etc.).
  • To clean up! Identify what you no longer need and sort what you give and what you will save. Take the opportunity to organize a flea market (or visit to find out what you need for a cheap price).
  • Take an inventory of the goods to be transported and be sure to identify the most useful (last to be packed) and most fragile (to be packed separately).
  • Choose a simple color code (1 to 5 colors) that you can use to organize the boxes in the weeks leading up to the move (e.g. one color per room in your new home or “green” so that the boxes can be unpacked first .) A couple of weeks before moving

Report your change of address to all organizations that you contact by email:

  • Your suppliers of electricity, natural gas, telephone (mobile and / or housing), cable, internet and maintenance services.
  • Your medical service provider (CLSC / private clinic, dentist, optician, massage therapist, veterinarian, etc.).
  • Your suppliers of other professional services (lawyer, accountant, contract and / or professional association, etc.).
  • Your subscriptions (newspapers, magazines, delivery address of the e-commerce websites used).
  • Try going to a hardware store and / or home improvement center with your list of equipment to purchase to avoid accidentally wasting time.
  • Have the carpets and other blankets you want to bring to your new home cleaned so you can install them straight away.
  • Pack the least useful items (decoration, dishes reserved for special occasions, books, DVDs, CDs, out of season items, etc.) every day two weeks before moving, observing the specified color code.

A few days before the move

  • Continue packing in the order of priority according to the color code. Make sure that you don't pack the most important items before the day before moving.
  • Group the fields by color code as close to the entrance as possible to make moving easier.
  • Identify the boxes on more than one side to avoid unpleasant surprises (identify fragile items four times and not even!).
  • Prepare the electronic equipment and empty, pull and clean the equipment according to the packaging that came with the moving company.
  • Confirm the date and time of D-Day again with the moving company and the family members involved.
  • Provide access to a parking space for the truck in front of both the old and the new house (ask the people who will help you to share the car).

Checklist for stress-free moving - couple

The day before the move

  • Store important documents from computers on a USB stick, which you can keep together with other important physical documents (passports, ID documents, contracts, diplomas, prescriptions, etc.) in a bag that you have with you when traveling (not in a truck) ). If you have young children, add their favorite blanket and / or toys.
  • Complete the packaging of high priority items. Make sure the furniture is professionally packaged and inspected before you pack it.
  • When you arrive at the new home, prepare two or three boxes for unpacking and clearly identify them (household items, clothes for the first night, toiletries, cutlery).
  • Have a small tool kit (to disassemble some doors and furniture shelves the day before and / or the day of the move), a small first aid kit, paper towels, toilet paper, soap, and a few clean towels.
  • Collect cold water pumpkins in a cooler and some easy-to-consume snacks on the go (like hiking).

D day

  • Get up early enough to be ready before the movers arrive.
  • Ask the moving companies to store the boxes in the color of the truck (you have already arranged the boxes in the house).
  • Follow the instructions to give the keys to the new residents, regardless of whether you are the tenant or owner of the old house.
  • Place the crates in the least used space of the new house and pay attention to the color code when unloading the truck.
  • Make sure the parts of the new house are safe before you start unpacking your boxes.
